Chester Winter Carnival

1787079-winter-knit-hat-040214-979CHESTER, VT — What could be better than a carnival in mid-February!

Thanks to the owners and staff of the Chester Hardware Store, Chesterites and those visiting the town revel in some good old fashioned winter fun in February.

The list of planned activities usually includes a bonfire, ice skating, sled races, snowshoe softball, sled dog rides, a snow sculpture contest, and a Winter Carnival Dinner, a snowmobile poker run and a broom hockey tournament.

With Mother Nature’s help, it will be a great winter festival again this upcoming winter for all ages.

Covered Bridges Uncovered

slaughterhouse covered bridgeCHESTER, VT — The innkeepers have this year found that more and more Chester House guests are interested in visiting the covered bridges while touring southern Vermont.

Many visitors are fascinated at the bridges’ design, solid construction and durability. Annette Latella of Boston just loved their rugged beauty. “They are so delicate, yet so strong and durable, she said. “I’ve never seen such a marvelous collection. Every bridge I’ve seen rivals the previous one. I’ve taken some great pictures at each covered bridge I visited.”

Vermont has the greatest collection of covered bridges in the US, many of which are still in use. A century ago, there were over 600 covered bridges, but the flood of 1927 left only about 200, many of which have since been lost to fire or development. The remaining bridges in Vermont are among the nation’s finest.

With 22 of Vermont’s 114 covered bridges located within 35 miles, it’s no wonder that the Chester House is a popular hub for visitors interested in visiting these historic architectural marvels.

Well, this Spring some unexpected guests showed up and took some available room that suited them just fine. Since they let us take their pictures (below), we decided not to charge them for their stay:
